Amber necklace: A suitable teething aid for babies?

Whether an amber necklace can make teething easier for your baby is a matter of opinion. There is no scientific evidence for this. However, many seasoned parents swear by amber. We have summarized what this is all about for you.

Why should the amber necklace help the baby?

Many parents firmly believe that an amber necklace makes teething easier. Since the resin of the amber came from coniferous trees that grew in primeval times in what is now the Baltic Sea region, the stones are said to release an essential oil when worn. The effect of the oil ensures that your baby survives teething less painfully . It goes without saying that a real amber necklace must be used. Plastic stones that look like amber can of course have no effect.

Scientifically not proven

Amber is said not only to help with teething, but also to remedy many other diseases. The resin is said to promote optimism, arouse creative ideas, cheer up the mind, inhibit inflammation, help with rheumatism and even strengthen the immune system.

However, this has not been scientifically proven. It is not about the actual effect that the amber has on the human organism, but rather about the belief that the person puts into the stone. Esotericism is a very sensitive healing art that can only be used if the owner of the amber actually believes in the healing powers of the resin stone. If you don’t believe in the healing powers of the amber necklace, then you should probably leave it alone.

Attention: risk of injury for your baby

We advise against hanging an amber necklace or other necklaces around your baby’s neck. The risk that your baby could strangle itself is too great. If you decide to put an amber necklace on your baby, you should never leave your baby unattended . Your baby could also choke or choke on the small stones if the chain breaks. To reduce the risk, it makes more sense to get your baby an amber bracelet or hand the necklace while you are nearby and can intervene quickly in an emergency.

Observe safety instructions for amber necklaces

Should you nevertheless decide to get your baby an amber necklace, you should definitely observe the following safety instructions:

  • So that your baby does not accidentally strangle itself, the amber necklace should definitely have a magnetic clasp.
  • Also make sure that the stones are individually knotted around the ribbon. This prevents choking if the chain breaks anyway.
  • The tape itself should definitely be tear-resistant.
  • A better variant is a bracelet made of amber. Here, too, you should make sure that the band is tear-resistant and that the ambers are individually knotted around the band. The bracelet may make your baby uncomfortable if tied too tightly around the wrist. In this case, do not let your baby out of your sight. If you or no one else is near your baby, it is best to remove the bracelet as well.
  • To prevent bacteria from collecting on the bracelet, it is important to regularly rinse the chain with warm water and then let it air dry.

Use suitable gear rings instead of amber chains

If you want to effectively help your baby teething, it is more helpful to get a suitable teether than an amber necklace. Since it has not been proven that amber necklaces can make teething easier and that they are dangerous for your baby, you should better help your baby with a good teething ring. You can choose a teething ring with liquid, for example. Put it in the fridge first – never in the freezer! – and then give it to your baby to bite. That should ease the pain.

According to the German professional association for children and young people, you should use teething rings without dangerous plasticizers. Teething rings made of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are suitable for this. Violet roots, for example, are also suitable as a natural healing method for teething.
