Nausea during pregnancy: what helps?
Do you suffer from nausea during pregnancy? Unfortunately, a common complaint among expectant mothers: according to a MomaSquad survey, a quarter of the 3,500 mothers surveyed suffered from frequent morning sickness.
Why do so many suffer from nausea during pregnancy?
Every third pregnant woman loses her appetite for steak and co. Sometimes the smell of food alone is enough to make you have to visit the toilet involuntarily. However, there is no general explanation for this nausea during pregnancy. Rather, it is a combination of physical changes that is responsible. The main cause of nausea during pregnancy is the increase in the hormone “ estrogen ”. This increase creates a sensitive sense of smell, excess stomach acid, and increased fatigue, all of which contribute to nausea.
However, it is comforting to know that the annoying discomfort during pregnancy actually has more or less a meaning. Namely, the body forms an aversion to alcohol, nicotine and coffee . Many pregnant women are also “sensitive” to meat, eggs, poultry and fish. All of these foods can contain bacteria that the immune system cannot fight. By renouncing, the fetus is protected.
Tip 1: Rest and plenty of fluids
If you suffer from nausea during pregnancy, you should rest and ensure that you drink plenty of fluids, for example in the form of water, juice spritzers, fruit, herbal and ginger teas. A tea mixture of chamomile, lemon balm and peppermint helps with stomach cramps. Drinking is particularly important as you need to compensate for the loss of fluids, which is caused by vomiting, among other things.
Tip 2: spoonful of bee honey
To prevent morning sickness during pregnancy, you can take a spoonful of honey in the morning on an empty stomach.
Tip 3: contrast showers
A contrast shower in the morning stimulates the circulation and can also contribute to an improvement in general well-being. First take a warm shower and then take a cold shower.
Tip 4: Dry toast or rusks
Another way to combat discomfort during pregnancy is to eat a dry slice of toast or rusks on an empty stomach.
Tip 5: Eat lots of fruit throughout the day
Low blood sugar levels promote nausea during pregnancy. You can counteract this by eating fruit throughout the day.
Tip 6: Acupressure or Acupuncture
Some also swear by acupressure: pressing the inside of the wrist for 30 seconds. The best thing to do is have your midwife show you how to do this. Some midwives also offer acupuncture treatments to help combat nausea during pregnancy.
Of course, no pregnancy is like the other and that also applies to morning sickness. In most cases, however, the nausea stops after the end of the third month. If you suffer from it too, we wish you a speedy recovery! Maybe one or the other tip will help to alleviate the symptoms a little.
When should you go to the doctor?
The above tips can help to avoid nausea as much as possible. If this advice does not help, if you vomit more than three to four times a day or if you lose weight, you should consult your doctor for advice. Even if your vomit is bloody or you lose more fluid than you can take in, alarm bells will ring.
