Martin Luther wrote the Christmas carol “From heaven high, there I come here” in 1539. The Christmas story according to Luke served as a template for the text. Since then, the song has been a permanent fixture in every Protestant hymn book and has even been translated into English, Dutch and Danish.
1. From heaven high, there I come,
I bring you happy new tales;
I bring so much to the good fairy tale
that I want to sing and say.
2. A child has been chosen for you today, born
of a virgin,
a child so delicate and fine,
it shall be your joy and delight.
3. It is the Lord Christ, our God,
who wants to lead you out of all trouble,
he wants to be your savior himself, cleanse you
from all sins.
4. He brings you all the bliss that
God the Father has ready, so
that you should live with us in the kingdom of heaven
now and forever.
5. Let us all rejoice
and go in with the shepherds
to see what God has bestowed on us,
honored with his dear Son.
6. Oh, my dear little Jesus,
make yourself a purely gentle beg
to rest in my heart’s shrine, so
that I never forget you.
7. Praise, glory be to God in the highest throne,
who gives us his only son.
