How does cough syrup work?
Coughing can be quite uncomfortable for your child. However, before you resort to medication, you can first try to relieve your child’s cough with appropriate home remedies in a gentle way. A cough syrup is ideal for these purposes. It causes the mucus to dissolve in the airways and can be coughed up easily. So your child can recover quickly from his cough. A cough syrup can also ensure that your child’s bronchi calm down and coughing attacks are thus satisfied or even prevented.
Homemade cough syrup
Cough syrup is generally available in all drugstores and pharmacies. But you can also make it yourself with appropriate natural remedies, herbs or medicinal plants without much effort. We’ll show you how to prepare cough syrup yourself.
- Radish honey:Â Cut a black winter radish lengthwise and hollow it out with a spoon. If you then fill up both halves of the radish with honey and let the radish steep for eight to twelve hours, the result is a juice that is best kept in the fridge if possible and that you can always give your child to drink before meals. Since radish juice contains sulfur oils, this homemade cough syrup has a disinfecting effect on your child’s mucous membranes and soothes irritated airways.
- Raisin decoction:Â For a raisin decoction, first boil a handful of raisins, dried chamomile flowers and marshmallow leaves in water. Add a tablespoon of honey and give your child a teaspoon of the decoction every hour. This cough syrup has an expectorant effect on your child’s respiratory tract and can give him a quiet night’s sleep.
- Onion syrup:Â Due to their sulfur-containing ingredients, onions are ideal against coughing. They have an anti-inflammatory and disinfecting effect on your child’s mucous membranes and can quickly rid him of his cough. You can make an onion syrup yourself without much effort. To do this, simply cut an onion into cubes, fill them into a small bowl and sprinkle them with two tablespoons of sugar. Let the onions steep for a few more hours. This creates a syrup-containing liquid, which you can then skim off and give your child to drink as cough syrup.
- Horseradish juice:Â Put three tablespoons of grated horseradish with a tablespoon of lemon juice, a teaspoon of ginger and six tablespoons of honey in a glass jar and let it steep closed overnight. Your child can drink it up to three times a day. Similar to black winter radish and onions, horseradish also has sulfur-containing ingredients that have an anti-inflammatory and disinfecting effect on the mucous membranes.
