General information on susceptibility to infection
Does your child seem to be constantly ill, especially in the autumn and winter months? Small and school children who get an infection up to eight times a year (e.g. a cold or a middle ear infection) are not yet considered to be particularly susceptible to infections. However, if your child is ill particularly frequently, the illness lasts longer than 7 to 14 days or is of above-average severity and there is no opportunity to recover properly between infections, then the child is said to be susceptible to infections. Being constantly ill is not only particularly taxing for your offspring, but can also affect their development.
Your child’s immune system needs to develop first. If your child comes into contact with bacteria, viruses and fungi, their own antibodies are formed. Only through this contact can the immune system develop.
Fresh air, plenty of exercise, a healthy diet, regularity and rest in everyday life have proven to strengthen the immune system in a natural way. In addition, a Spanish study from 2006 found that children who were breastfed for a long time are less susceptible to infections than children who were breastfed for only a short time. This is because your baby also receives antibodies and immune cells from the mother’s immune system through breast milk in addition to all the vital nutrients – and thus becomes immune to many pathogens.
