There is no universal answer to how long you should breastfeed. Every mother has to find the right time for weaningfor herself and her child. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends full breastfeeding for at least six months because it has numerous benefits for your child’s health. The WHO even advocates that you continue to offer your child breast milk in addition to a balanced diet within the first two years of life.
What is often frowned upon here is quite normal elsewhere: In countries with greater poverty, mothers breastfeed their children quite naturally until they are four or even five years old. In this way, the mothers ensure thehealthy nutrition of the children in a simple way. Even in earlier times, breastfeeding of small children was common.
In this country, mothers usually do not breastfeed their baby for much longer than half a year. Often this is due to the professional situation and breastfeeding does not always work as well as the mother had wished. The rule is: What works for you is allowed. If you have the feeling that your child is not ready yet and it seems unnatural to you to stop breastfeeding, then the right time has simply not yet come.
In terms of health, you do something good for your child with prolonged breastfeeding: In the long term, the riskof allergiesandobesity decreases. Nor do you need to have a guilty conscience if you wean earlier.
