First aid for a sprain according to the PECH principle
- P- for Rest : All physical activity should be stopped immediately after a sprain to prevent further damage. The affected body part should be immobilized immediately.
- E- for Ice : To stop the joint from swelling further, you need to cool it down with ice packs, compresses, or cold spray.
- C- for compression : In addition to the cooling, it is advisable to put on a so-called compression bandage, which exerts a little pressure on the affected region of the sprain (the pressure should be dosed, i.e. good blood circulation must still be guaranteed). The bandage stabilizes the joint and also prevents blood from flowing into the surrounding tissue.
- H- for Elevation : The final step is to elevate the sprained body part. Pillows or other objects within reach are suitable for this. This stops further swelling and helps prevent unnecessary movement.
