St. Martin Songs: Popular Lantern Songs with Lyrics
In November it’s that time again: Sankt Martin is just around the corner. At this time, of course, the lantern festivals are also held. MomaSquad has collected the four most popular songs about Saint Martin for you.
The Martinsingen usually takes place on the day of the Martinszug, when the children parade through the streets with their homemade lanterns. The procession ends at a campfire, where a St. Martin’s play is often performed and wake-up men are distributed. The children then go from door to door singing and receive sweets from the residents of the house as thanks. These are the most famous and popular St. Martin songs.
I go with my lantern
1.)
I go with my lantern and my lantern with me.
Up there the stars shine, down here we shine.
A sea of lights in Martin’s honor. Rabimmel, rabammel raboom.
2.)
I go with my lantern and my lantern with me.
Up there the stars shine, down here we shine.
Martinsmann, he’s pulling ahead. Rabimmel, rabammel raboom.
3.)
I go with my lantern and my lantern with me.
Up there the stars shine, down here we shine.
How beautiful it sounds when everyone sings. Rabimmel, rabammel raboom.
4.)
I go with my lantern and my lantern with me.
Up there the stars shine, down here we shine.
The smell of cake is in the air. Rabimmel, rabammel raboom.
5.)
I go with my lantern and my lantern with me.
Up there the stars shine, down here we shine.
Give us presents today, dear people. Rabimmel, rabammel raboom.
6.)
I go with my lantern and my lantern with me.
Up there the stars shine, down here we shine.
My light is out, I’m going home. Rabimmel, rabammel raboom.
Text: folk tunes from Holstein
The woods are colorful
The forests are already colourful, the stubble fields are yellow, and autumn is beginning. Red leaves fall, gray fog billows, the wind blows cooler.
How the full cluster of grapes shines crimson from the vine arbor! Peaches are ripening on the railing, painted with stripes of red and white.
Nimble bearers jump, and the girls sing, everyone rejoices happily! Colorful ribbons float between tall vines on a hat of straw.
violin sounds and flute at sunset and in the glow of the moon; young winegrowers wave and begin a happy harvest dance.
Text: Johann Gaudenz Salis-Seewis (1782)
lantern, lantern
1.)
Lantern, lantern,
sun, moon and stars,
burn on my light,
burn on my light,
just not my dear lantern.
2.)
Lantern, lantern,
sun, moon and stars,
lock up the wind,
lock up the wind, let him
wait until we get home.
3.)
Lantern, lantern,
sun, moon and stars,
my light
stay bright, my light stay bright,
otherwise my dear lantern won’t shine.

Saint Martin rode through snow and wind
1.)
Saint Martin, Saint Martin,
Saint Martin rode through snow and wind,
his horse carried him swiftly away,
Saint Martin rode with light courage,
his cloak covers him warmly and well.
2.)
Sitting in the snow, sitting in the snow, sitting
in the snow, there sat a poor man, he
had no clothes, he was wearing rags.
“Oh help me in my need,
otherwise the bitter frost will kill me.”
3.)
Saint Martin, Saint Martin,
Saint Martin drew the reins,
his horse stood still with the poor man.
Saint Martin with the sword
immediately parted his warm cloak.
4.)
Saint Martin, Saint Martin,
Saint Martin gave the half still,
the beggar wanting to thank him quickly.
But Saint Martin rode
away in haste with his cloak part.
