Thaw, heaven, the just

1. »Thaw, heaven, the just!
Clouds, rain him down,”
cried the people in anxious nights,
to whom God gave the promise
one day to see the mediator himself
and to enter heaven;
|: for the gate was shut
until the Savior came forth. : |

2. Full of mercy, the supplication hears
God on the high throne of heaven.
All flesh shall now see
God’s salvation through God’s Son.
The angel hurries down and
returns with the answer:
|: »Look, I am the Lord’s maid;
be done to me as you said.« : |

3. And the Word became flesh
in Mary chaste and pure.
The gates of heaven are open,
God wants to be our brother.
And Elizabeth full of joy
greets the Blessed One;
|: even Johannes, whom she is carrying,
is happily excited by the spirit. : |
