Around the 4th month of pregnancy, your unborn child develops its first body hair, the so-called lanugo hair. The hair is short, thin and pigmentless. During pregnancy, the fetus loses its downy hair. If it is still present at birth, this usually indicates that the fetus is not yet mature enough.
The so-called cheese grease is anchored in the hair. These two components ensure that the skin of the fetus is thermally insulated. This also prevents the amniotic fluid from softening the skin of the unborn child. This soft fluff has another important function in the intestine: the fetus absorbs lanugo hair that has been shed through its mouth. Once in the intestine, these stimulate its movements. In very rare cases hair persists after birth, this is called hypertrichosis lanuginosa.
