Bumps and bruises are particularly common in children. With the first attempts to walk, the first bruises appear. The peak phase is then reached in elementary school. You can find out here how best to treat a bump or bruise with the LUCKY rule.
Your child is at an age when they rage and run around a lot. When playing , falls are inevitable. So are the resulting bruises. Usually, bumps and minor bruises don’t need treatment because the symptoms go away on their own within a few days. Nevertheless, you can reduce the swelling and speed up the healing process.
Treating a bump with the LUCKY rule
Bruises and bumps are usually easy to spot. They are usually caused by a blow or fall and become visible as bruises. In many cases, the tissue around the injury is swollen and painful when pressed. To alleviate the discomfort, it is enough to follow the same rules as for a sprain .
The so-called “PICK rule”:
- P=Pause: Rest the affected body parts
- E=Ice: Cool the area with wet towels or a cold pack wrapped in a towel for 15 to 30 minutes. The cold not only relieves the pain, but also helps constrict the blood vessels so that no more blood can flow to the surrounding tissues.
- C=Compression: A compression bandage is particularly useful for muscle and joint injuries. However, you must not put it on too tightly, otherwise blood vessels could be pinched.
- H=Elevation: Elevating the bruised body parts reduces blood flow to injured areas. This will prevent swelling and the pain that comes with it.
Bad luck rule does not help: when to see the doctor?
Actually, you don’t need to be treated by a doctor with a bump or bruise. They usually heal easily with the help of the LUCKY rule and disappear without a trace after a short time. However, if the bruise is still there after more than two weeks, you should have your child examined by a doctor. You should also take your child to the doctor for bruises on the head and abdomen, as he must rule out a head injury or internal bleeding.
