Complementary food plan: Introduce complementary food with the complementary food plan

Where’s the milk and what’s with the porridge? The baby may ask this when introducing complementary food. As parents, you want to know: which porridge to start with? What does the gradual introduction of complementary foods look like? We answer that in the supplementary food plan.

Complementary feeding plan: introduction of family feeding

At the table, please! From the tenth month, the porridge meals from the supplementary food slowly become part of the family diet. Important: You should not season the food for your child or only very sparingly. Small portions from the parents’ plate are not a problem, but over the long term, heavily seasoned food would impair your child’s taste development.

Supplementary feeding plan provides for additional liquid

As long as your baby feeds exclusively on milk, it usually does not need any additional liquid. However, when the first paps are fed, your baby may also have something to drink so that its fluid balance remains stable.

Water or unsweetened tea are best. You can easily have it checked to what extent your tap water is suitable as a drink . At the beginning of the complementary food, about 200 milliliters are sufficient, i.e. about one cup per day. However, the more porridge meals are introduced, the greater the need for fluids. At the latest when the third pap is introduced, the baby should drink 400 milliliters a day. You can find out more about this topic in our article “Water, teas and juices – what should your baby drink?” .

By the way: Some children skip the porridge phase and want to eat solid food straight away after only feeding them milk. There is basically nothing wrong with that either. Just make sure that your baby can chew and swallow the food offered without any problems and gets all the necessary nutrients in sufficient quantities. You can find a lot more information on the nutrition of small children in our special “Child nutrition” .
