How is a rainbow formed? This is a smart question, the answer to which you will find in physics. But if the physics lessons have been a while ago, we will refresh your knowledge now.
If you look at the sky on a sunny day, you won’t see a rainbow. Then you see only white sunlight everywhere. The formation of a rainbow must therefore – and the name suggests this – be related to the rain.
Light consists of a total of seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, indigo, blue and violet. But when all these colors shine on earth together, we do not perceive them in detail: we see only white. After all, there is nothing between the sun and the earth’s surface that “stands in the way” of light.
That changes when water comes into play. Because then this white light is refracted and split into its many colors. Imagine there is a small mirror in every raindrop. The light hits this mirror and accordingly cannot simply shine straight through the drop. Instead, it is diverted and thus subdivided. The result: a rainbow is created.
According to this principle, you can even create a rainbow in the nursery. All you need are:
