How is a rainbow formed?
Light consists of a total of seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, indigo, blue and violet. But when all these colors shine on earth together, we do not perceive them in detail: we see only white. After all, there is nothing between the sun and the earth’s surface that “stands in the way” of light.
That changes when water comes into play. Because then this white light is refracted and split into its many colors. Imagine there is a small mirror in every raindrop. The light hits this mirror and accordingly cannot simply shine straight through the drop. Instead, it is diverted and thus subdivided. The result: a rainbow is created.
Make your own rainbow
According to this principle, you can even create a rainbow in the nursery. All you need are:
- a bowl of water
- a hand mirror
- a flashlight
Lean the mirror against the edge of the bowl filled with water. Then turn off the light and shine the flashlight on the mirror in the water. Immediately the colorful rainbow colors should be visible either on the room wall or on a white sheet of paper.
