Freezing baby food: Here’s how!
Cook fresh food for your baby every day? It doesn’t have to be that way. Freezing baby porridge is very convenient. And it’s easy. You should keep these five things in mind when freezing baby food.
Why freeze baby porridge?
Save time ice-cold: Freezing baby porridge is especially practical because you feed your babywith home-cooked porridgesand at the same time save a lot of time. Because you can cook large amounts of porridge at once, then store them in smaller portions. If necessary, you only warm up the prepared complementary food.
As a rule, you do not need to freeze ready-made jars because they have a longer shelf life.
Here are five things you should pay attention to when freezing baby food:
1) Important rules for freezing baby food
- You should freeze the baby porridge asfresh as possible, because this will result in the least loss of nutrients and a longer shelf life is guaranteed.
- As soon as the freshly cooked porridge hascooled to room temperature, fill – either into an ice cube tray or other small freezer containers.
- The containers in which you will freeze the baby porridge should definitely becleanandpreferably boiledso that they are as germ-free as possible. This will prevent unwanted microorganisms from entering the porridge.
- It is also important to pack the baby porridge asairtight as possible before freezing. Our recommendation: the KIDDO FEEDO baby food storage made of high-quality, BPA-free silicone.DisplayWith only minimal effort, you can easily free the frozen contents.
- Meals are best kept frozenat a minimum of -18°C. So they have a shelf life of a few months.
2) Containers for freezing baby food
In which containers is it best to freeze baby porridge? In principle, you can use all containers that are suitable for the freezer.
Tip: Freeze as small portions as possible, as they can be portioned better later. Once thawed and warmed, portions of porridge should not be frozen or warmed up again. If your baby isn’t eating it all, it’s better to dispose of the rest.
Ice cube moldsare best suited for this purpose. From this, the individual porridge cubes can then be squeezed onto a clean plate.
Important: Close the containers well so that the contents do not become contaminated.
3) After freezing: thaw and warm baby porridge
From ice-cold to hot: To defrost, simply place the baby porridge overnight in the fridge and then heat in the microwave, a pot or in a water bath. You can also warm up the frozen porridge. But then it takes a little longer.
Attention: When warming up, always make sure that the meal is heated evenly. This is especially true if you heat the porridge in the microwave. Always stir the porridge well before feeding andbe sure to check the temperature before your baby eats it.
4) Can every baby porridge be frozen?
As a rule, all baby porridges can be frozen without any problems. However, they have different shelf lives:
- Vegetable and fruit porridgescan be kept frozen forup to six months.
- Boiledfish and meat, on the other hand, can only be kept forthree monthsafter freezing.
- You should not leave complementary foods withmilkin the freezerfor more than two months.
As long as you observe the respective deadlines, nothing can go wrong.
Only with complementary foods fromavocado, bananas or melonyou should completely refrain from freezing. Avocados, for example, become bitter in the freezer and change color unpleasantly. Even withpotatoes, it is better to cook them fresh every time and mix them with the other, thawed porridge ingredients just before feeding.
5) Label baby food before freezing
