General information about bursitis
In bursitis, one or more bursa become inflamed. These lie like a soft buffer near joints, for example on the elbows, knees, hips or shoulders. Bursae serve as a kind of damper between hard and soft structures. Inflammation is usually caused by excessive pressure on the bursa. Bacterial infections and external violence from (sports) accidents can also trigger inflammation. Then the region around the bursa is swollen and reacts painfully to pressure. The affected area may also be red and hot.
If the symptoms persist or the pain is very severe, you should definitely consult a doctor!
