An effective method that is supposed to solve several skin problems at the same time is the derma roller. This tool triggers a kind of peeling effect with tiny needles, hence the name “micro needling”, and thereby stimulates the skin’s collagen production. The result: the skin should look more even. How do stretch marks form?
Stretch marks are caused by the overstretching of the skin caused by the rapid growth of the abdomen. The skin on the stomach, legs and buttocks is not elastic enough and tears as a result. Cracks and streaks remain on the skin, which do not have any health consequences, but are often perceived as aesthetically disturbing.
How does a derma roller work?
If you roll the derma roller over affected skin areas, it causes micro-injuries in your skin with its many small needles. This stimulates blood circulation, collagen formation and skin renewal. As a result, your skin regenerates faster. When used correctly, the derma roller has a positive effect on the appearance of stretch marks and scars. On the one hand, the stripes become narrower, but the dark discoloration of your skin also decreases and thus matches your actual skin tone more closely.
How do you use the derma roller correctly?
Hand on heart: An application with tiny little needles is not completely harmless. So before you test the derma roller yourself, you should seek advice from a beauty salon or a dermatologist.
It is particularly important that you make sure before use that the needles are sterile and that medically sound metal has been used, such as stainless steel. For beginners or if you have very sensitive skin, it is generally advisable to use finer, shorter needles.
Roll the derma roller over the affected areas of skin. Make sure that you don’t press too hard and never pull the derma roller sideways over the skin. In between you should stop and change direction so that the skin areas are treated from all sides. You should roll the tool about 6-8 times in each direction.
After the treatment, care for your skin with sufficient moisture, for example a nourishing body oil. It is best to avoid irritating ingredients such as perfume, it is better to use an oil with purely natural ingredients.
Which derma roller is the right one?
Dermaroller is not the same as a dermaroller, because not every needle is suitable for every part of the body. If you want to treat stretch marks on the stomach, you need a different needle length than for the face, for example. This is because the skin on your face is much thinner than the skin on the rest of your body. If you use the same needles on the stomach (approx. 0.3 mm), you will probably not be satisfied with the result. Instead, you can use a needle length of up to 2 mm to achieve an optimal result.
Please note: Since you use longer needles for stretch marks than for a facial treatment, there should be a little more time between treatments. Carrying out the needling every two to three weeks is completely sufficient here.
Micro needling during pregnancy
Does it make sense to treat the stomach with the derma roller as a preventive measure during pregnancy? In principle, this is not recommended! Although micro needling is not directly harmful to the baby, since you only apply it externally, caution is advised here. Since the treatment causes fine injuries to the skin, there is also a risk of infection or an allergic reaction. You should therefore refrain from treatment during pregnancy and only start afterwards.
