The right diaper size for your baby
There are different sizes of diapers, depending on the size and weight of your child. But which diaper fits when and how do you know when it’s time to change to the next larger diaper? In this article you can find out what you should look out for when buying diapers and how the individual diaper sizes differ.
The different diaper sizes
Diapers are constant companions in the first years of your child’s life. You change them several times a day and your child lives through most of its adventures with and in them. It is therefore important that the panties made of cellulose and cotton wool fit well and keep the baby’s bottom as dry as possible. To ensure this from newborn to toddler, there are diapers in different sizes.
Attention: Cloth diapers usually do not have different sizes, but can be used over a very long period of time. All information in this article therefore refers to disposable diapers.
Basically, the size of the diapers depends on the body weight of the child. A size 1 diaper, for example, is suitable for a newborn child between two and five kilos, while a size 6 diaper can be used for a body weight of up to 30 kg. However, the exact suitability specifications differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, which is why one size 2 diaper may be recommended for a body weight of three to six kilos, but the same size from another manufacturer for a body weight of four to nine kilos.
Which diaper size for your baby?
The most important thing to consider when choosing the diaper size is that the diaper is neither too tight nor too big. So your baby can move easily and the diaper does not leak. Right after birth, choosing the right diaper size is usually easy, as newborns usually fit in size 1 diapers for a while. However, if your baby is very large or heavy, this diaper size may no longer fit him very soon after birth. It is therefore advisable to buy both a size 1 and a size 2 pack of diapers before the birth to be prepared for all eventualities.
There are different signs that you should switch to a different diaper size.
- A larger diaper is due when the diaper on the stomach can hardly be closed, is very tight or your baby’s legs are “constricted”. Diapers that are too tight can cause sores that are painful for your child. Therefore, when opening the diaper, pay attention to any pressure points or red welts on the legs or hips. When closing the diaper, you can also make sure that one or two fingers fit between the diaper and your baby’s body to make sure that it is not too tight.
- Even if the diaper leaks regularly, you should consider using larger diapers, even if the diaper itself is not too tight. Because the suction power usually increases with the diaper size. If the recommended kilograms of different diaper sizes overlap, it is best to choose the larger diaper to prevent leakage again.
- In addition to a diaper that is too small, a diaper that is too large can also mean that it is not tight. Especially in newborns, the stool is often very liquid. Since they are also still very small, the problem can often arise that the diaper leaks down to the neck. For such cases, some manufacturers have special diapers for newborns, which are intended to prevent leakage even in very petite children.
Testing is above studying
Finding the right diaper for your child can take some time and depends on many different factors. The manufacturer’s information on the weight of the child is therefore only to be regarded as an approximate guideline. Deviations between the weight of your child and the information on the pack are possible in both directions, since the fit of the diaper also depends on the physique. For example, if your child is very small, a diaper recommended for 10-14 pounds may fit even though they already weigh 15 pounds. Conversely, if your little one is on the stocky side, your little one may need a 12-20 pound diaper even though they only weigh 10 pounds.
The cut of the diaper, which differs a little between all manufacturers, can also affect whether a diaper fits or not. A size 3 from one brand sometimes fits like a size 4 from another. It can also happen that size 2 from a manufacturer fitted perfectly, but size 3 no longer fits at all. Or maybe you thought you found the perfect diaper, but as your child becomes more mobile and starts crawling or crawling, it leaks more and more often.
Simply test several products with your child to find the “right” diaper and to guarantee that your baby feels great every day.
Tip: Many manufacturers offer sample packs with two diapers so that you can test whether the diaper is suitable for your child before buying a large pack.
