“It’s going to be a boy!”: As soon as we parents have heard this phrase from the doctor, we eagerly search for beautiful boy names . The choice is huge, which makes it all the more difficult to choose the “right” name. Should it be something traditional or rare or even unusual? A difficult decision – after all, a person usually carries their name for life.

It’s always exciting to see what the current trend looks like: Which names have German parents chosen most frequently for their sons?

Hit list of the most popular male first names

Which boy names do we parents prefer to give? The Wiesbaden-based Society for the German Language (GfdS) provides an answer to this question. In order to determine the first names most frequently given in Germany, the German registry offices sent almost 1,000,000 first names to the Society for the German Language. This means that almost 90 percent of the first names given are recorded. Here is the result of the ten most popular names for boys:

1. Maximilian
2. Alexander
3. Paul
4. Elias
5. ben
6. Noah
7. leon
8. Louis/Luis
9. Jonas
10. Felix

The result clearly shows that German parents prefer more traditional boy names. Maximilian  is in the  top position and Alexander makes it to second place . Paul   is the first name in third place and Elias in fourth place . Overall, the ranks have only shifted slightly by one or two places. A bit of variety in the top 10 brings a “new face”: newcomer Jonas .
