General information on strains, sprains and dislocations
A strain can occur after sudden, uncoordinated movements. Individual muscle fibers are overstretched. The surrounding connective tissue is easily damaged. To avoid a strain, your child should warm up well before exercising and avoid sudden movements until the muscles are warm.
In a sprain, the joint structures are pushed against each other. The joint surfaces are separated from each other beyond the normal extent by strong force. Once the force has ended, the joint structures return to their original state. This can be quite painful for your child. The joint swells and, depending on the severity of the injury, bruising and restricted joint mobility can also occur. You can find more information about sprains and what first aid measures you should take in the first aid special .
Unlike a sprain, the separation of the joint surfaces in a sprain is not temporary and persists even after the trauma. Severe pain with movement and pressure, swelling, bruising and an abnormal joint position can be the consequences. If your child has sprained a joint, you must immediately cool and immobilize the injury.
Dislocated, dislocated joints must be put back in place by a doctor!
