Learning English: 10 learning tips for your child

Does your child have problems in English at high school? Maybe he just lacks the motivation to study vocabulary or grammar rules. We have put together ten tips for you that you can use to help your child learn. This way, English at high school is guaranteed to be fun again.

1. Use existing knowledge

New knowledge can be better remembered by your child if it can be linked to existing information. Make it clear to your child that they can actually speak a lot of English, because we also use a lot of English words in German. Search together in everyday life and find expressions such as computer, fan, party, cool, ticket, partner look or happy birthday. This motivates your child to take a closer look at the English language.

2. Learn English through play

So that your child can have fun learning English again, you can practice the subject together at home in a playful way. There are not only numerous educational games for the computer, but also board games specially developed for English that you can practice with. Ask your child’s English teacher what exactly your child should practice in English and whether they might have any insider tips.

3. Learn English with books

If your child loves to read, children’s books in English are a great way to improve vocabulary and grammar. The book should match your child’s interests, but not be too demanding. Perhaps there is a book that your child has already read in German and that you can now offer them in English. “Harry Potter”, “The Chronicles of Narnia”, “Winnie the Pooh” or “Family Five” are, for example, popular English children’s and youth books.

4. Learn English with music

Your child can also improve their English by trying to understand lyrics and singing along. Many pop songs played on the radio are in English. Encourage your child to listen carefully and understand individual words. You’ll see: It motivates your child immensely when they suddenly understand their favorite song and can sing along.

5. Movies make learning English easier

Another particularly attractive way to learn English is to watch films. Most DVDs have a language selection option and can be watched in English. So your child has the opportunity to learn a lot of expressions and words by just listening.

6. Learning English vocabulary made easy

Learning vocabulary is tiresome, so you can try little tricks to make learning a little more interesting. You can make a card game with the vocabulary and play together. Or you write the particularly difficult vocabulary on sticky notes and distribute them around the apartment so that your child encounters them all the time. This is how your child can easily improve their English.

7. Learn English with a letter or email friend

Learning English becomes much more exciting when your child can try out and apply their knowledge. A pen pal is particularly good for this. At the same time, when your child writes with an English-speaking peer in other countries, they can cultivate an international friendship, improve their written English, and learn from the pen pal.

8. Improve your English skills on vacation

You can also give your child the opportunity to use their English outside of class with a holiday or a language trip. There is no better place to learn a language than in the country where it is spoken. Your child has to face the challenge of making themselves understood and they get to know the cultural background. By traveling to an English-speaking country, your child will see the benefits and value of their language skills right in front of them. For example, if he has to ask for directions, he will be grateful if he paid attention in class while the directions were being given.

9. Student exchange to learn English

Many schools organize small student exchange projects in which the students host an exchange partner from England for a few days at home and vice versa travel to England to see him. This gives your child the unique opportunity to get to know family life and everyday school life in another country.

10. Tutoring in English

Tutoring can also be a way to support your child with their problems in English. There are many professional tutoring institutes where subject teachers can help your child to improve their performance again. But your child can also catch up with somewhat cheaper, personal tutoring from older pupils or students.
