Okotest checks clinical thermometers: Here are the results
Your child’s cheeks are red, their eyes are glazed and instead of romping around wildly, they would like to sleep? Clear case of fever! With a clinical thermometer you can reliably measure how your child’s temperature is developing. Ökotest put clinical thermometers through their paces. You can find the results from the 2017 test here.
Many children are not enthusiastic when it comes to taking a temperature. The cold metal under the armpits or in the buttocks is uncomfortable and babies in particular who do not understand what is happening often start crying immediately. To make taking a fever a bit easier, there are some thermometers that either work without physical contact or work with more comfortable materials.
Ökotest: Many thermometers were able to convince in the test
Ökotest tested 16 contact and infrared thermometers and had them tested for both functionality and harmful substances. The overall result is definitely something to be proud of: 13 thermometers scored “very good” or “good”. A thermometer, on the other hand, failed in practice and was given the grade “poor”.

Questions & answers about the thermometer:
How far can I insert the clinical thermometer into the baby?
For an accurate measurement result, it is sufficient to insert the clinical thermometer approx. 1-2 cm rectally. The metal tip serves as a visual marker – as soon as this is no longer visible, the clinical thermometer has been inserted far enough. A little tip: It is best to lightly grease the tip, then it will be more comfortable for your baby.
How do I clean the clinical thermometer?
It is best to clean the thermometer with disinfectant or disinfectant wipes. Waterproof devices can of course also be cleaned with hot water and soap. There are special protective caps for the ear thermometer that can be easily disposed of after the measurement process.
Which battery do I need for the clinical thermometer?
Since almost all clinical thermometers work electronically these days, they need a new battery from time to time. Usually these are AA size batteries or button cells. It is best to look directly at the packaging when you buy it and get a replacement battery.
Where can I dispose of the clinical thermometer?
The no longer functional thermometer should of course be disposed of professionally together with other electronic devices. You can hand in the devices in some specialist shops and recycling centers. In addition, old electronic devices are picked up by the city cleaning department free of charge on an agreed date. The thermometers must not be disposed of with the residual waste in the household waste.
Which clinical thermometer do I use to determine my ovulation?
Please consult your gynecologist if you are considering using the basal body temperature method. There are special thermometers for this that show sensitive degree deviations and sometimes display a curve sheet of your body temperature.
Which clinical thermometer measures most accurately?
When used correctly, any thermometer should measure accurately. However, clinical thermometers that are inserted into body cavities measure most accurately. When using it, it is best to pay close attention to how the respective measuring device is to be used. Your pediatrician or pharmacist will be happy to help you with this.
