Soothers made of silicone or latex: which is better?
Is latex or silicone recommended for a pacifier? Learn more about their properties and which material is more suitable for you.
The question of the right material is best left to let your baby decide, because that’s purely a matter of taste. If your little pacifier spits out the pacifier immediately, that’s a pretty sure sign that it doesn’t taste good.

Latex pacifier
Latex is a brownish, soft natural material. However, it contains natural fats that quickly make the teat unsightly. It is recommended to replace latex pacifiers every four to six weeks. But beware: Some babies are allergic to latex.
Silicone pacifier
Silicone stays in shape longer, but your child can also bite through it more easily. Once the first teeth are there, you should check the pacifier regularly by stretching for cracks and holes and throw it away if the material is damaged.
ÖKO TEST tests pacifiers made of latex and silicone
In its test results published in 2010, ÖKO TEST also pointed out other important material properties. The pacifier should definitely be free of bisphenol A-free, as this substance can promote later health damage, such as infertility, brain development disorders or breast cancer. In addition, the shield of the pacifier should not be made of polycarbonate, as this material can also harm health.
Almost all tested pacifiers perform very well in terms of quality and pollutants. Only with two out of 25 pacifiers, the testers complained about something. Learn more about the test results in our article “25 pacifiers in the test”.
