1st month of pregnancy: 1st to 4th week of pregnancy
In the first month of pregnancy, the nerve cells responsible for controlling bodily functions are formed in the embryo. In addition, your baby is now firmly connected to you via your bloodstream.
1st month of pregnancy: your baby
The 1st month of pregnancy is hidden from most mothers. Here are the most important developmental steps of your baby in the 1st to 4th week of pregnancy:
- Three weeks after fertilization , the clump of cells has already embedded itself in the wall of the uterus.
- It is connected to the mother’s bloodstream via the placenta (the outer cell mass).
- The formation of organs is not yet evident.
- After the 15th day, the first nerve cells are formed, which later control bodily functions and create the conditions for your baby’s consciousness. At this point you can have your pregnancy confirmed by a pregnancy test and during the initial examination by your gynaecologist.
- The outer germ layer (the outer cell store) thickens and forms two longitudinal folds. The neural tube forms between the folds, at the end of which are the systems for the brain, the nerve cords and the spinal cord.
- The skin, hair, sebaceous glands and sweat glands are also formed on the outer germ layer. The cells of the middle germ layer build the skeleton, heart wall, muscles, blood vessels, and lymphatics that make blood cells. With the help of the heart, these can build up the blood circulation of the embryo. Ovaries, testicles and kidneys are also formed in this layer. The respiratory and digestive organs develop in the inner layer of the cotyledon.
- The embryo grows one millimeter per day. At the end of the first month, your baby is the size of a thick pinhead (4mm).
