In the first years with your baby, the diaper bag becomes your constant companion as soon as you leave the house – a checklist for the diaper bag is therefore a good memory aid.

You should pay attention to this when buying a diaper bag

Some important factors that you should consider when purchasing the diaper bag are size, layout and handling:

• Size: Since you have to accommodate many things in the diaper bag so that all eventualities are provided for on the way, the bag should not be too small. Just take some utensils with you to buy and test whether everything can be easily accommodated in the bag. However, the diaper bag should not be too big, otherwise it can quickly become unwieldy.
• Division: Also in the division of the interior, diaper bags often differ greatly from each other. Particularly practical are bags with different sized compartments, which give you a better overview. If the bag only has a large inner compartment, clothes, diapers and Co. can easily get mixed up and you have to search longer to find something. With individual compartments you can assign all things their fixed place. Some diaper bags also have an insulated compartment for the baby bottle, in which it stays warm longer.
• Handling: When buying a diaper bag, also consider how you will mainly transport the bag in the future. If you are often traveling with the stroller, a long carrying strap is an advantage, with which you can hang the bag over the stroller handle. Such a strap is also practical if you want to hang the diaper bag over your shoulder. If you don’t want to carry the bag on your shoulder, you can think about getting a changing backpack that you can carry comfortably on your back.

Of course, the appearance of the diaper bag also influences your personal decision. Just try out several models and think about which model you are likely to be satisfied with in a few years.

Checklist diaper bag: What goes inside?

What exactly you put in the diaper bag depends to some extent on how old your child is, what special needs or habits they have, and how long you are on the road. However, there are some things you should definitely have with you. Here is a small checklist for the diaper bag:

• Fresh diapers: For longer trips, bring two to three fresh diapers. If you want to calculate as accurately as possible, try to estimate how long you will be on the road before setting off and compare this time with the intervals at which your child is usually swaddled.
• Changing mat: The diaper bag includes a padded, foldable changing mat that can be easily washed off. In many models, such a base is already integrated. In this case, you don’t have to plug them in.
• Plastic bags:  You don’t always have the opportunity to dispose of full diapers immediately. There should therefore also be one or two empty plastic bags in the diaper bag, in which you can store the changed diaper until you find a rubbish bin.
• Cleaning wipes:  Since it is rather cumbersome to clean your child’s buttocks with a damp cloth when you are out and about, wet wipes, preferably special baby wipes, are a good idea for excursions. Make sure these are fragrance-free so they don’t unnecessarily irritate delicate skin. Wet wipes are also practical because you can wipe your hands with them after changing diapers.
• Wound protection cream:  If you have a sore bottom, you shouldn’t do without protecting your baby’s skin from moisture when you’re out and about. So get it on your diaper bag checklist.
• Burp Cloths:  Since you may also be feeding your child on the go and they will burp afterwards, it’s a good idea to pack some burp cloths in the diaper bag. These are also very practical because they can be used in many ways, for example as a bib, as a sun protection that is placed over the stroller or tied as a headgear. You can also place a burp cloth on the changing mat so that your child does not lie on the cold plastic with its bare skin.
• Change of clothes: Since you never know what will happen on your trip, a set of fresh baby clothes definitely belongs in the diaper bag. The most important thing is usually a fresh body, in case the diaper is leaking, but a fresh top and pants can usually not hurt. In summer, you should think of a hat to protect your child from the sun when he leaves the stroller.
• Vials or porridge: In the event that your child gets hungry on the way and you are not breastfeeding, there is definitely a place for baby food in the diaper bag. If your baby gets milk from the bottle, you can measure the powder already in the bottle and take a thermos bottle of hot water with you. If you feed your baby porridge, think of a spoon and, if necessary, a bib in addition to the jar.
• Beverages: Never forget to bring enough drinks if your child gets thirsty on the way. Unsweetened teas or water are best for young children. Offer your child something to drink in between, even if they don’t ask for it.

If you just want to do a few errands together with your child, you can take a smaller bag with you, which only contains diapers, a changing mat, wet wipes and a change body.
