This is how the nursing pillow supports you when breastfeeding
A nursing pillow, also called a positioning pillow, is a great help during pregnancy and for new mothers. Even during pregnancy, the nursing pillow helps you to relax, later it supports you with breastfeeding by finding a comfortable breastfeeding position for you and your baby. Find out here what types of nursing pillows there are and how you can use them for yourself.
Nursing pillows are reminiscent of neck pillows and are available in different colours, sizes and with different fillings: with ESP beads, wool balls or grain. We have compiled the properties of the various fillings for you below.

ToggleThere are these types of nursing pillows
Nursing pillow filled with ESP beads
- Durable
- Hygienic
- antiallergic
- Easy
You should pay attention to this: The pearls can smell pungent. They are made with styrene, which is necessary for the foaming of polystyrene. This in turn is processed into the pearls. When buying nursing pillows with ESP beads, pay attention to the workmanship and quality. If this is bad, the styrene can outgas and be carcinogenic. A good tip is therefore the smell test. If the nursing pillow smells funny, you should definitely refrain from buying it.
Nursing pillow filled with wool balls
- Flexible
- Soft
- Malleable
- Pleasant
You should pay attention to this: Since the filling is made of wool, the nursing pillow can quickly become damp. So you should keep it dry. For some babies, the wool filling is too soft and they “sink” into it. However, you should try this out yourself with your child, because this soft material is particularly suitable for some babies.
Nursing pillow filled with grain
- Store body heat
- Stable
- Made from natural material
- Adaptable
You should pay attention to this: If you are allergic to spelled or grain, a nursing pillow with these fillings is not recommended. Like the wool pillow, you should store it dry, otherwise mold can form in the pillow when it gets wet. The nursing pillow is much heavier than the other pillows, so you should consider beforehand whether it is suitable for your needs (if you use it mainly as a base, a heavy pillow can be an advantage, if you want to carry it mainly, or in your arm as a support for your baby, a lighter pillow may be more suitable).
Before you decide on a nursing pillow, you should test different designs. Maybe your girlfriend or midwife has a nursing pillow that you could try? You will quickly notice which filling you get along with best. It can also be an advantage if the nursing pillow has a zipper so you can ventilate the contents.
Nursing pillow during pregnancy: The ideal pregnancy pillow
Nursing pillows can help you relax during pregnancy. You can use it in different positions and for different purposes: under the back to relieve the spine, on the stomach to support it, under the legs to elevate them and so on. You can place the pillow exactly as it is comfortable for you.
Nursing pillow as a positioning aid when breastfeeding
Breastfeeding your baby often takes a long time. Especially if your baby is very close to you during a growth spurt . It is all the more important that you put your baby on so that you are comfortable too. Above all, you should take care to relieve your back and neck as well as your wrists and elbow joints. This is very easy to do with a nursing pillow: You can lay your baby on the pillow while breastfeeding so that it lies comfortably and makes breastfeeding easier for you. No matter in which position you prefer to breastfeed, the pillow can always be of help.
- Cradle position: In the cradle position, you can place the nursing pillow under your arms. This prevents pain in the arms and neck.
- Cross pose: This breastfeeding position is similar to the cradle pose. So you can either put the nursing pillow under your arms again, or under your child’s head so that it is not only supported by your arm, but also by a soft surface.
- Back grip : Since in this position you are tucking your child “under your arm” and your baby is lying with you, the nursing pillow is suitable in this position, for example, as a base for your baby. You can tuck it under his back for support, or you can place smaller nursing pillows under his head for better contact with your breast.
- Lateral position: In this position you can place your nursing pillow behind your baby as support so that it does not “tip over”. But it is also suitable for letting your child lie higher or supporting their head so that they can reach your nipples more easily.
