5 tips on how to relax your baby’s tummy
A baby’s tummy is sensitive. One of the reasons for this is that his digestive system is not yet fully developed and must first get used to the new food. This can lead to abdominal pain, bloating and other digestive problems. We will show you how you can help your child now.
If your baby keeps pulling their legs up against their body, stiffening, squirming, and crying or screaming for no apparent reason, then abdominal pain could be the cause. You can do this to relieve the symptoms:

Toggle1. Heat pads and bathing
Warmth is good for your child’s stomach. Use a special heat pad that is suitable for use with babies. These are usually spelled pillows, since the spelled grains are not as heavy as, for example, cherry stones. Place the warm (not too hot!) pillow on your baby’s tummy and hold your sweetheart tight in your arms. This keeps the pillow in the right place and you can comfort your child at the same time. Swaying movements provide additional relaxation.
A warm bath can also ensure that the stomach relaxes again. The first bath should only take place when your baby’s navel has healed. The water temperature should be around 37 degrees, in the room it should be around 23 to 25 degrees.
2. A soothing baby massage
With a baby massage , you help your baby in two ways: because it helps against stomach pains, but also calms your child if it has cried a lot because of the pain. For the massage, the room temperature should also be around 25 degrees so that your offspring does not freeze. Alternatively, you can perform the massage under a heat lamp. Use baby oil for the massage and warm it up to body temperature beforehand, for example with your hands or in a water bath.
Massage your baby’s tummy in a clockwise circular motion. This circling can be repeated as often as you like, it is best to see how your child reacts to it. Then you grab his legs, bring them carefully to his stomach and then stretch them again. Repeat this movement a few times, then stroke your little one’s tummy again. Let the movements end with the arms and legs and then give your baby some time to kick, so winds are released.
3. Home remedies for the discomfort
Various home remedies can help against the causes of abdominal pain .
In the event of constipation, your baby – if it is already eating complementary food – is good to eat high-fiber foods such as porridge or fruit puree. They soften the stool in the intestine. On the other hand, if your child suffers from diarrhea, constipating foods such as carrots and bananas should be on their menu.
4. Pilot grip and gentle rocking
The fly grip ensures that flatulence in the stomach is relieved. Your baby lies face down on your forearm or alternatively on your thigh. You support your head with your hand or the crook of your arm. The gentle pressure allows the air to escape from your child’s stomach.
Or you rock gently with your baby in your arms on an exercise ball or take him for a short walk, which often relaxes the little tummy.
5. A wholesome tea
A warm tea is not only good for us adults – it can also relieve stomach ache in the little ones. There are teas with soothing herbs such as fennel, anise or chamomile especially for the needs of babies, which help when there is a gurgling or pinching sensation in the tummy. The warmth of the tea also contributes to the well-being of your offspring.
If the tea is suitable for babies, then children can get it from the second month. The tea should not contain any sugar or protein extracts and come from strictly controlled organic cultivation. You can also dilute it with plenty of water, as babies’ sense of taste is still very sensitive.
Stomach pain in babies is usually not a cause for concern. When the digestive system is more developed, they usually go away on their own. However, if your baby cries a lot and is in pain after every meal, the bowel movements change significantly , your child no longer wants to eat, is not gaining weight or is even losing weight, you should definitely ask a doctor for advice. Your midwife can also help with digestive problems and show you baby massage, for example. She is also good at controlling the child’s weight.
