Can a platonic relationship become more?

Platonic relationships can be a relief in many ways. You have someone by your side who you trust, but who, conversely, does not ask for anything binding or intimate. But what if it suddenly has to be more? We’ll enlighten you.

That means platonic relationship

A friendship between woman and man but also woman/woman and man/man can be described as a platonic relationship. It is characterized by a mutual benevolence as well as intimacy and spiritual connectedness. In a platonic relationship, however, sexual desire is absent. Rather, it is a friendly and familiar relationship.

Such a relationship can arise in different ways:

  • Early Childhood Friends: If you’ve known someone for a very long time, it’s usually considered a platonic relationship. Such a relationship is similar to sibling love.
  • Friendship/Soulmate: A relationship of support and life sharing, but lacking in erotic desires.
  • Partnerships/Marriages: There can also be platonic relationships in partnerships and marriages. These work when the emotional connection is so strong that the sexual component is irrelevant.
  • A former love relationship can also become a platonic relationship, namely when the passion has “waned”. A platonic relationship isn’t a bad thing in that sense, as long as both of you feel the same way.

Platonic relationship – can it work?

Especially between heterosexual women and men, the cliché that a platonic/friendly relationship cannot work keeps popping up. Critics think that sooner or later there will be more feelings.

But the fact of the matter is, as long as both partners agree on the basis of their relationship, there’s no reason a platonic relationship shouldn’t work. This means, among other things, that there is no sexual attraction between the two people and that, for example, one has no objection to a love relationship with the other. One should therefore agree on what constitutes the relationship and where its limits lie.

It only gets difficult when one party wants more intimacy or can imagine a love relationship.

How does a platonic relationship become more?

When one partner in what is actually a platonic relationship wants more, it can be a tricky situation. You risk losing the easy, friendly relationship if the other person doesn’t feel the same way. On the other hand, a close and happy relationship  often grows out of an existing friendship.

If you find yourself in a situation where you would like to bring your platonic relationship closer or are even unhappily in love, it helps to start with small steps. Conversely, if you think your friend wants more, it also helps to pay attention to the following points.

  • Body language, touches: Is touch more extensive than necessary? How does the eye contact feel? Does my counterpart blush?
  • Activities, time together: Are advances made? Have you met recently that could pass as a date? How much time is spent together?

The good thing about such characteristics is that people basically have a keen sense of whether a relationship is changing and in which direction. So the chances are usually good that your counterpart has an idea of what’s going on and he/she behaves accordingly. So in this case it’s just a matter of waiting.

But waiting is not necessarily the best solution, especially if you are particularly unlucky in love. As in any relationship, communication plays an important role in a platonic relationship . So here’s our tip: Talk to the person you’re talking to. Touch the topic and talk about your feelings.

Conclusion: Platonic relationship – yes/no?

A platonic relationship can be infinitely valuable in its meaning. After all, it’s all about the emotional connection and having someone by your side. Converting a platonic friendship into a relationship can sometimes be difficult. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not possible. Communication and courage are the key here.
