Crafts with watercolors: magic pictures
Children as young as two and a half can experiment with this painting technique. With watercolors, they conjure up previously barely visible lines and surfaces.
Age: from 2 1/2 years
What you need: white wax crayon or white candle, possibly other light-colored wax crayons (e.g. yellow, pink or light blue), watercolors, paper, brushes, possibly a hair dryer
Craft instructions for magic pictures
- Use a crayon or candle to draw dots, lines, circles, and patterns on the paper. Your child should press the wax crayon or candle firmly onto the paper so that thick wax lines and wax surfaces are created.
- Paint over the whole sheet with watercolor. Your child will be amazed to find that the barely recognizable lines and areas they have drawn are now clearly visible. The reason for this: the wax ensures that no water color is absorbed by the paper under the painted lines and areas.
- If your child enjoys it, they can first apply a light shade of watercolor and let the picture dry. Then she paints the picture again with light wax crayons. Then he paints over the whole sheet with darker watercolors. This creates an image of drawn lines in two different colors and a dark background.
- Tip : If you want to be quick, you can dry the picture with a hair dryer after the first application of paint. However, be careful not to hold the hair dryer too close to the paper so that the wax you drew on does not run off.
