When can children learn judo?
- The German Judo Federation recommends judo for children from the age of five. Between the ages of five and seven, the sporting requirements for martial arts are laid in the little ones.
- Children can only take a judo test from the age of seven to show that they can fluently execute some of the movements of the basic techniques. The first colored belt is the sign of the passed exam.
- The right basic training in judo is given to children between the ages of eight and ten.
What do children learn in judo?
In this Japanese martial art, the little judoka, as the judo fighters are called, learn techniques to defeat an opponent without physically injuring him. For this reason, children practice safe falling and rolling, throws and handles in judo.
Under the motto “victory by giving in”, values such as politeness, helpfulness, honesty and respect are taught to the children in judo.
How much do judo lessons cost?
The annual contribution costs for judo lessons can vary between 60 and 150 euros. However, some martial arts schools charge significantly higher fees. Parents sometimes have to budget for costs of 40 to 50 euros per month. Children often train judo more cheaply in a club. Some also offer a fee reduction if several family members train in the same club. It doesn’t matter whether you register your child in a club or a martial arts school: the fees for each test are added to the fees.
How long are judo lessons?
The training units for judo lessons can be very different. A course usually lasts 45 to 60 minutes and takes place once or twice a week.

Children can learn judo in the martial arts school or in a club. Certainly courses are also offered in your area. Just ask a judo club or martial arts school of your choice whether you can watch the lessons together with your offspring. This way you can get a first impression of the club or the martial arts school together and get to know the teachers.
What equipment do children need for judo?
Children only need a judo suit for judo . This is made of white cotton fabric. Beginner suits are perfectly adequate for little judoka. An expensive professional suit would therefore be superfluous for the time being. But since the little ones usually train barefoot on the mats, you should give your offspring indoor shoes for going to the toilet or changing room.
What skills does judo promote in children?
