Climbing for children: climbing courses and equipment
Climbing is offered to children from about seven years of age. In the course, the young participants not only learn the most important gripping techniques, but also how to properly secure their climbing partner. When can children climb?
- Children can learn to climb from around the age of seven. If your child has already done a taster course and had fun doing it, these are good prerequisites.
Note: In some climbing halls, so-called “Bambini climbing courses” are also offered for children from the age of four. - After a few years of climbing experience, children from around 13 years of age can independently belay another climber. This is always monitored by a supervisor.
Climbing as a family experience
Climbing with children is often an exciting experience for parents too. During the exercises you will not only be taught the most important basics of the sport. You can also learn a lot about the strengths and weaknesses of your loved ones and intensify mutual trust in each other.
What do children learn while climbing?
In the courses, children are taught the most important basics so that they can later climb independently and safely. In the exercises, they learn, among other things, how best to hold on to the individual handles, because only with the right technique can they progress, save their energy and protect their joints. In handling the rope, the young course participants learn how to tie themselves in and secure their climbing partner. But they are also taught the various rope commands. It is important that they are mastered by all climbing partners to ensure optimal communication.
Where can children learn to climb?
Children can climb in a climbing gym run by an independent operator or a club. Simply inquire on the internet about a climbing hall in your area. On the website of the hall operators you can quickly and easily find out about current offers and prices. For climbing, it is also recommended to take part in a taster course. This is the only way you can determine whether it is the right sport for your child.
How expensive is a climbing course?
The cost of a climbing course can vary from operator to operator. In climbing gyms, for example, you can count on a monthly fee of between 110 and 140 euros. In a club, the courses are usually offered at more favorable conditions. However, you should calculate a one-time admission fee in addition to the annual contribution.
Good to know: The introductory taster courses cost between 40 and 60 euros.
How long does a climbing course last?
The course units are determined very differently by the operators. Basically, you should expect kids to practice for 90 to 120 minutes once or twice a week.
What equipment do children need for climbing?
For climbing, children initially only need comfortable sportswear and sports shoes . However, if your offspring wants to stay with the sport, they will need their own equipment at a later date. The purchase of a climbing harness and suitable shoes are therefore most important. But your child also needs a belay device and a locking carabiner to belay.
Climbing equipment is usually provided in climbing gyms. You can rent special climbing shoes from some operators. You usually have to pay a rental fee for this service.
What skills do children acquire while climbing?
- Health: Your offspring’s spine can develop properly thanks to the wide range of movement sequences. This counteracts the first postural damage.
- Motor skills: Your child’s muscles, endurance and strength improve.
- Cognitive skills: Children get to know their bodies and can better assess their own abilities.
- Social skills: The team spirit and sense of responsibility of your offspring will be strengthened through the partner exercises and the securing of another little climber.
